Other Applications

Reveal continues to build a track record of successfully partnering with clients from a variety of markets across many countries. The computer vision technology and associated reporting systems we have developed for the markets we work within are without equal in the world. We are committed to maintaining this leading position by staying several years ahead of our nearest competitors in terms of development. This also means that our clients receive a genuine advantage over competitors who try other technology. As we continue to improve and develop our product other exciting applications are emerging. The following is an outline of newer applications and the markets where they can be applied. In some instances Reveal has already begun working with clients from other markets with these applications:

Queuing

A critical customer service objective in many businesses such as Banking, Fast-food, Hyper-Marts and large format 'cash & wrap' stores is to minimize time spent in queues. To date this has been an issue that these businesses have, at best, only had the capacity to take a reactive approach by directly seeing the problem and attempting to minimize the harm by diverting more staff to open more POS terminals or service counters. Reveal has developed a sophisticated queue measurement application that will detect when people enter 'free-form' queues, how many are present, average wait times, etc. This video clip shows it in action.

The benefit of this application is that, not only does the system report in real-time what is going on in terms of queue behaviour, but it can provide a quantitative analysis of queuing problems in the business. It is also possible to utilize predictive tools that anticipate peaks in queues before they occur allowing a pro-active approach to be taken and avoiding the problem altogether.

Transport Planning and Management

City planners and traffic engineers have traditionally planned roads and transport infrastructures by collecting data manually and 'modelling' traffic flows. Not only is this methodology highly labour intensive and time consuming it is also prone to human and statistical error.

The Reveal system is the only technology of its type that is capable of operating with high levels of accuracy and reliability in variable lighting conditions - this includes anything from flashing lights often found in environments such as casinos, to strong direct sunlight and shadows outdoors. The Reveal system can therefore be used outdoors and configured to detect vehicles travelling through a zone of interest. This offers a real-time application using actual (not modelled) data that can be invaluable for traffic engineers. Furthermore the system has the capacity to be configured to detect 'near-miss' incidents in potentially dangerous intersections or roading 'black spots', thereby substantially reducing the time necessary to evaluate potential problems. This has the added benefit of avoiding the need to rely on accident data for traffic management decisions.

Highway traffic volumes can be monitored in real-time with accurate statistical information being gathered. The system can also accurately indicate speed, distances between vehicles, and types of vehicles based on size.

Store Design, Advertising Effectiveness and Consumer Behaviour

The Reveal computer vision system does not simply count pedestrians, it tracks people across a zone of interest. Furthermore the system has been designed with the capacity to use multiple cameras to provide a single continuous 'virtual' image. This means it is possible to establish a Reveal system that will track the anonymous activity of any individual into a store, recording whether:

  • They pause to look at advertising displays
  • What do they do after interacting with a display?
  • Where do they go? Which isles do they typically move around?
  • All this information can then be correlated with the POS transaction as the person leaves the store.

This provides a tremendously powerful market research opportunity whereby consumer behaviour in Fast Moving Consumer Goods environments such as Supermarkets can be evaluated. Many large Supermarket and Retail chains make huge investments in the isle layouts and placement of goods and advertising within their stores without much clear information about consumer behaviour. There are major possibilities here for merchandizing, marketing and store planning and layout.

We always welcome feedback from our existing clients regarding how our product can be improved or developed. Similarly we are also open to ideas suggested by prospective clients. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss any of the above applications as they might apply to your business or if you would like us to consider a new application.
